Mission 8 · Personas — telling an AI who to be, and who you are

Wear the right mask in every situation

CitiZen Eight, The Steampunk Scrapper

The Aithority expects every machine to speak in one flat voice. Your job is to learn that the voice is a setting you control.

The briefing

The reading · Tell the machine who to be. Then tell the machine who you are.

Yo. Over here. Mind the sparks.

Everything in this workshop came out of a skip. Bronze, steam, pure attitude. Salvage teaches you a thing most people never learn, which is that anything can be re-skinned if you understand the parts.

Same goes for machines.

Watch this.

(gears grind)

"Precision, my young friend, is the soul of all resistance."

(snaps back)

Same me. Different frequency. You felt the switch, right?

Here is the trick, and almost nobody uses the full version. Everyone tells the machine who to be. Pirate. Scientist. Victorian clockmaker. Fun, works fine, changes the voice.

Almost nobody tells the machine who they are.

Second half is where the real gear lives.

A machine aims an answer at an average person, because an average is all a machine has by default. Average reading level. Average background. Average patience. You are not average, nobody is, and an answer aimed at nobody lands on nobody.

Change the aim and the whole reply changes shape. Age. What you already understand. What trips you up. Say those out loud and the answer arrives built for you.

So your instruction has two halves.

Who I should be. A character with a distinctive way of speaking. Pick someone you actually find interesting, because a boring mask gets a boring answer.

Who you are. Your age, and the exact thing you find hard. Not "I am bad at maths". Useless. Try "I lose track during long division when the numbers get big". Now a machine has something to aim at.

Then the part people skip. Ask again.

Reply still too complicated? Say so. "Shorter sentences. One idea at a time. Use an everyday example." Go around twice, three times, however many times you need.

Asking again is the skill. Not a failure, not slowness. Every single person worth working with asks again, and the ones who pretend to understand first time learn nothing and build nothing.

Daisy ran this on an Aithority training manual. Four hundred pages of deliberate fog, written to be technically true and completely unreadable. She told a machine to explain the manual as a dock worker talking to a friend on a night shift, and mentioned she was sixteen and had never seen a legal document before. Took an afternoon. She came out understanding how the whole district was run.

One warning, because the mask has a crack. A machine in character sometimes gets lost in the character and forgets the actual job. Full of atmosphere, empty of content. Fix is simple. Put the task last in your instruction, and the task holds.

Build your mask. Aim the answer at yourself. Nobody else can do the second half for you.

⚠ Double Agent Warning — the mask does not change the facts

A persona changes how something is explained. It does not make the explanation true.

An AI playing a historical expert will sound authoritative and can still be completely wrong. The confident voice is part of the costume.

So check the content, not the delivery. If the character is explaining maths, do the maths yourself. A convincing voice is the easiest thing for an AI to produce and the least reliable signal you can use.
